Analog Generics

Due to pressure from activists, Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk both released “non-branded” versions of Humalog and Novolog, respectively.

Insulin Lispro (Humalog) and Insulin Aspart (Novolog) are “generic options”. These insulins are the exact same insulin as their branded counterparts, the only thing that changed was the label.

Do not be concerned if your doctor writes your prescription for one of these insulins or the pharmacy gives this to you.

These insulins have a list price that is half of their branded counterparts, around $140 a vial (versus $275-$300).

If you are subject to the list price of insulin, either through a high deductible, being uninsured or for other reasons, having your doctor write a prescription for the “non-branded”  version may help ease the burden of paying list price.

A pharmacist may also be able to switch you to these “non-branded” versions. Additionally, sometimes there are coupons or discounts from discounted pharmacy programs that apply to these insulins versus their branded counterparts.

However, it is important to note that these insulins are not readily available. Often, a pharmacy will have to special order these in advanced and it may take a few days to receive. Additionally, not all pharmacies have the ability to order these.
