You, MAD, and Your Data

(a.k.a: our Privacy Policy)

Unlike large for-profit corporations that wish to profit off of and exploit your personal information, us volunteers that make up Mutual Aid Diabetes strive to be good stewards of the information you entrust us with.

You (and generally those who seek help from Mutual Aid Diabetes) deserve to know what information we collect from you, what we do with your information, how we protect your information, and what rights you have regarding the information we have about you (among other things!).

The Fundamentals

  • we receive information about you when you request aid from us and potentially during any related follow-up interactions/communications
  • we only ask for information that we believe is relevant to helping you, such as:
    • what name and pronouns we should use when referring to you
    • a way to get in contact with you, like a phone number or email address
    • approximate location (so we can help connect you with local resources)
    • an address where you can receive physical mail
    • contextual information that is relevant to your request for help, such as what kind of assistance you are looking for and how urgently you need assistance
  • you are not obligated to provide any information to us, but we may be less able to help you without certain pieces of information
  • generally, your information is only used to provide you with requested assistance
  • we do not (willingly or knowingly) provide your information to anyone outside of our group of volunteers, except when necessary to provide you requested aid
    • for example: if you request that we (or someone else) physically send you something, we inherently need to provide your address to the sender, the mail courier, and/or the entity which sells us the mail postage.
  • we make an active effort to protect your information from disclosure outside of the group
    • we currently lack meaningful controls around what access volunteers have to your data, but we hope to improve this in the future.
  • we believe that you should have control over your data and enable that where practical

We hope that you will understand that due to the relatively informal and dynamic nature of our work (and a desire to actually help people in need instead of writing privacy policies) we may not have provided enough information here and we may not be fully delivering on those aforementioned things you deserve.

Please let us know if you have any questions, concerns, or want to exercise control over any personal information that we possess about you. You can send an email to privacy@mutualaiddiabetes.com and one of our volunteers will get back to you when they are able.
